PODCAST 02 (parts one & two)

Following on from last month's test podcast, it was suggested that the programme be expanded from 60 minutes to two hours.  That wasn't the plan, but there was so much material that it was decided to go for it at the last minute.

However, the Carty FM podcast server wouldn't upload the file.  Even reducing the sound quality to 96kbps failed.  So the show has been divided into two parts without the need to suffer any quality loss.

PLAYLIST (part one)

01 - The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary

There aren't many songs like this that can get away with being played in a dance night club!  And this never fails.  The intro drags you to the speaker, just waiting to smack you in the face when that first drum is hit.  When this single was released I immediately bought the album, Love.  A great collection of songs that never fail let me down.  Their best moment.  Closely followed by their harder, rockier follow-up album, Electric.  Another future potential podcast playlist contender (I'm thinking Lil Devil or Love Removal Machine?).

02 - Collide - Feed Me To The Lions

Probably the sexiest of all Ant cover versions.  Taken from the album, Vortex it's a gutsy guitar led number, even more so than the Ants' original.  They have also recorded a fantastic version of Funboy 3's "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" which can be heard on their MySpace page:

www.myspace.com/collide

03 - Sparks - This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us

This track is the opening song on their 1974 album Kimono My House, and was the lead single from the album, reaching #2 in the UK singles chart.  It's also been covered by Siouxsie & The Banshees on their (1987) Through The Looking Glass album and revived here by Marco Pirroni's label, Only Lovers Left Alive for the Biba compilation CD.  A timeless classic.

04 - Adam Ant - Billy Boy

Adam Ant released his Wonderful single in 1995.  Beautiful Dream was promo'd to radio stations as the next single.  EMI pressed up a limited number of CD singles for the release, but it was shelved in place of Gotta Be A Sin.  Fans never got to hear the bonus tracks from the Beautiful Dream CD's and when bootleg recordings started to filter through, the quality was disappointing.  Copies of these CD's have changed hands for over £2,100 on eBay.  In 2006 EMI announced that they would make all the recordings from the EMI singles available for digital download as Extra Wonderful.  This track is one of those recordings, taken from the new promo CD for this podcast only.

05 - The Wolfmen - Jackie Says EP Megamix (Carty megamix demo)

The first release from The Wolfmen comes in the guise of the Jackie Says EP which features four tracks:  Jackie Says, Up All Nighter (drums and production by Chris Hughes), Needle In The Camel's Eye (drums by Chris Hughes) and If You Talk Like That.  This is my demo of a megamix of all four songs.  Luckily all tracks were around the same tempo, I just had to make some key adjustments to avoid key clashes.  The EP is released on 10" vinyl on Damaged Goods Records and as a digital download.

06 - Mantra II - (Chant) Mantra II (Filthy Remix)

Mantra II asked me to remix this after hearing my remix of their version of Man Called Marco (which you can find on Carty Mixes Volume 6).  I ended up producing two very different mixes and the band chose this Filthy Remix for their new album Werewolves Of London (out now at hmv.co.uk).  The other mix (Rich Remix) can be found on my WTF Volume 3 compilation.  As a result of this project I was roped in for post-production duties for half of the new album.  I can exclusively reveal that inspiration for the hand-claps on this remix came from D-Mob's "Put Your Hands Together" (which were recreated from scratch).

07 - Undadogz - Stranded Me [MYSPACE TRACK OF THE MOMENT 1]

Ever since I first heard this track on MySpace, I knew I just had keep playing it.  So who is Underdogz?  He's from Cornwall in the UK and is the guy who wrote the track Honesty which Mantra II cover on their their current album.  In fact you can now here Underdogz's own version of Honesty on his MySpace page.  He's also recorded a rather splendid version of Stand & Deliver which he tells me resulted in some positive comments from Marco Pirroni.  Let's hope he gets signed up soon.

08 - Relaxed Muscle - Muscle Music [MYSPACE TRACK OF THE MOMENT 2]

Belgian Ant collector Antmania (Tony) recommended this gem to me. This band is made up of Jarvis Cocker (yes, that one) and Richard Hawley.  I thought I had been in contact with the band at some point but can find no evidence of that for this.  Plus the MySpace page (which features this track) claims not to be connected to the band!  Anyway this Kings Of The Wild Frontier influenced track appeared on their 2003 album A Heavy Nite With...

09 - Bow Wow Wow - I Started Something

This is a brand new recording by the band from their MySpace page.  It's a cover version of the Smiths song and captures that old Bow Wow Wow sound perfectly.  Recorded for a Smiths tribute album on Cleopatra Records.

10 - Marco Pirroni - Ant DVD Menu Megamix (Exclusive podcast megamix by Carty)

Not much to say here, but these are Marco's new guitar parts from the DVD menus on the Digital Tenderness DVD.  I've mixed them all over the drum loop from Brain Candy to use as a music bed for talking about the new Ant releases.  Unfortunately, the talking was much shorter then the megamix so I had to chop it up into little bits to spread it out.  That way, I avoid the risk of getting told off for using them publicly!  ;-)

11 - Adam Ant - Brain Candy

Last month's test podcast featured Headgear from the unreleased Persuasion album.  This only features here as it was the best Ant track of this tempo to use for the Ant DVD Menu Megamix above.  A song about M&M's and refers to the old row of the green colouring used when they make them.  A bit like a hard penis - "melts in your mouth not your hand".

12 - The Imbeciles - Cool T-Shirt

On the podcast, I mention that Kevin Mooney had left the Lavender Pill Mob to join The Imbeciles.  What I forgot to add is that he has also now left this band (now called The Imbeciles And The Poison Umbrella).  Anyway, I saw these guys live a couple of times when they had first signed to Marco's OLLA label and this was the band's (and the label's) first release.  Produced by one of Richard X's stable mates, Pete Hoffman,  and coupled with a great "b-side", Systematic.

13 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Suffragette City

I have to confess to being a big Frankie fan.  And this track appeared on one of the 12" singles of Rage Hard.  A very energetic cover of the Bowie song that never seems to age.  Luckily, for people like me, it appeared on the remastered version of their Liverpool album, which is where the Amazon logo links to opposite.  One of their members, Nasher, has a page on MySpace:

www.myspace.com/nasher

14 - Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next

I had this, and a track by Catatonia lined up for this podcast's play list.  I guess the success of the Welsh bands from a few years back is still fresh in my mind.  I remember seeing the Manics at a small local gig in our home county before they were famous.  But this track really sums up how fantastic the album is.  Even though it rips off a Stranglers' track!!

PLAYLIST (part two)

15 - De Phazz - The Mambo Craze

What can I say about this?  Just this one track alone wants to make buy their album Godsdog (so why haven't I??).  I sampled the opening strings from this for the Carty & Marco track, Physical (the So High Mix to be precise).  This was also a single and the quality of the remixes were equally as impressive.  I love this sort of music and wish I could be as creative as this.

16 - Propaganda - Heaven Give Me Words

I have always been a fan of Propaganda and their first album, Secret Wish remains an all time fave.  However, when they left Trevor Horn's label ZTT, they dropped their two female singers and found a new sound.  The producer at the helm for their 1234 album was Ant man Chris Hughes, and the new voice was American beauty Betsi Miller.  Chris ended up marrying her and they still both live in Bath (UK) where she runs her own business in the city center.  I had to call her once as part of my job and she came to the phone thinking the guy called Chris on the other end was her husband.  Needless to say, the call ended there!

17 - Seal - Hey Joe

I remember being sent the Killer...On The Loose promo CD back in my radio days and was bowled over by the 3D Mix of Killer.  Not to mention the other great gems on this EP.  One that sticks in my mind was a new version of his track Whirpool, but in a Hendrix style.  Another is this smooth take on a Hendrix song, Hey Joe.  Seal is another of my favourite artists who never fails to please me with each release.  And live, he's just as superb.

18 - Herbie Hancock vs Malcolm McLaren - Buffalo Gals Rockit (Carty mix demo)

Blame Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals for me wanting to be a DJ.  The number of records that "scratched" on my parents' belt driven turntable was shocking...even my Ants collection!!!  However, this started it all for me, and Herbie Hancock's Rockit was released soon after.  I was hooked.  So the opportunity to bring these to inspirational pieces together could not be overlooked.  It's just a demo mix on this podcast as I need to add some stereo effects with the McLaren samples.  I'm sure this will end up on WTF Volume 4 as Volume 3 is filling up rather quickly.

19 - Pheugoo - Egyptian Reggae/Freak Like Me

I remember when mash-ups were limited to the DJ remixing services like DMC and Mastermix.  Now everyone's doing it.  There's even a forum dedicated to such bootleg mixes and I went through a phase of downloading quite a lot of them.  This was one of the best and isn't even listed on Pheugoo's site.  The best mixes are often the simpler ones, and these two tracks work together fantastically.  I didn't credit the mixer on the podcast as I didn't know who it was at the time.  Sorry mate.  But what a mix!

20 - The Wolfmen - Kama Sutra (Carty remix demo)

This is a cheeky story.  I was sent Kama Sutra by Marco attached to a non-related email and immediately loved it...which doesn't happen often.  Good tunes have to grow.  I mentioned I was fond of the guitar work and requested the instrumental.  Now there is a technique of extracting the vocals when you have two such recordings and ended up (luckily) with just Chris's vocals.  It needed the club treatment and that's the demo you hear now.  I want to add something to the middle 8 section, but not sure yet.  This track could be The Wolfmen's next single.

21 - Adam And The Ants - Killer (SGS demo)

Firstly, I am putting my neck on the line playing this.  Hence why it's covered in Carty FM jingles.  It's taken from the same session as Omlette From Out Of Space which appears on the remastered version of Kings Of The Wild Frontier.  Will this appear on the planned Adam And The Ants demos box set?  Well ask yourself if the box set well ever be released first.  I'm sure you can hear the inspirations for Killer In The Home and Navel To Neck.  The cover you see on the left is this site's interpretation of what we think the sleeve could look like.  We have not seen it.  It's just an image we dreamt up.

22 - Morningwood - Why Do Girls Love Horses (live)

A gutsy live version of the Adam Ant b-side which the band regularly perform during their gigs.  There are no plans to release this and has only been available to view as a video on AOL.

www.myspace.com/morningwood

23 - U2 - Even Better Than The Real Thing (Perfecto Remix)

A remix which blew me away the moment I heard it.  When I realised it was a Paul Oakenfold remix, it made perfect(o) sense.  There are few remixes that I hold in such high esteem, and even though it was a sod to mix with the Banshees track for the podcast, I am glad to say that it still sounds just as great today as it did five years ago.

24 - Siouxsie And The Banshees - Happy House 2004

I stumbled across this two years ago by accident.  If only Ant remixes were made this way.  I don't think this ever received a proper release, but it was promo'd to UK clubs.

25 - Madonna - Jump (Carty Club Mix 2006.1 excerpt)

The best track on Madonna's current album, Confessions On A Dance Floor is this one, Jump.  However, it's not the album version here.  This is part of the Carty Club Mix 2006.1 mix from WTF Volume 3.  The bass line reminded me of Don't Be Square (Be There) by the Ants, so I added a sample to emphasise the point.  And yes, that is Popcorn by Hot Butter at the beginning of the mix.  Blame Madonna for starting Jump off with something vaguely similar.

26 - Muse - Knights Of Cydonia

The only reason I listened to the latest Muse album, Black Holes & Revelations, was after seeing numerous TV performances of their single, Supermassive Black Hole.  This particular track, Knights Of Cydonia is best described as Ennio Morricone vs Queen and reminds me of some of Marco's work.  Muse recently appeared on Carty Mixes Volume 9 in the Muse vs Adam Ant mix, Muse At The Top.

27 - Toyah - Angel & Me

The Changeling is an awesome album, and one of the first ever to be recorded digitally (as opposed to analogue).  It was a tough choice to choose a track for the podcast as so many are worthy.  Angel & Me is pure class.

28 - Massive Attack - Teardrop

If ever you're alone at home, and if you have a great sound system or decent headphones, I recommend the Mezzanine album played loud.  It's both sensual and moving. Probably their best work since Unfinished Sympathy.  The video for this is very memorable as it features a baby in the womb singing the words to the song.  Or so I am told...I have yet to see it!!!
